(John Glenn was later to go into space on board a shuttle mission, so technically he was the last of the astronauts of Project Mercury in space.)

∙ 15y agoJohn Herschel Glenn (born July 18, 1921) was the first US astronaut to orbit the Earth, on February 20, 1962. Thirty-six years later, as a United States Senator from Ohio, Glenn became the oldest astronaut to go to space. He flew aboard Space Shuttle Discovery on a nine-day mission in October, 1998. He was 77 years old.
