∙ 13y agoMany might think that Quebec was the first city, but that honour goes to Saint John, New Brunswick.
Saint John, New Brunswick, was the first incorporated city in British North America. Saint John was first occupied by the British in 1758. Following the Revolutionary War, Loyalists fled the US in droves. Many came to the Saint John area in 1783 and established two settlements, one on either side of the river. Parrtown was on the east and Carleton was on the west.
The two communities were united, and King George III incorporated the City of Saint John by Royal Charter on May 18, 1785.
The founder of Saint John is said to be Governor Thomas Carlton.
