Suresh Mehta is the present navy admiral of India.

Vice Admiral Nirmal Kumar Verma, the eastern Naval Commander, was on Saturday named the next chief of Navy. He will take over from incumbent Admiral Sureesh Mehta on August 31 when the latter retires.

Verma had once commanded India's sole aircraft carrier INS Viraat. He comes with a rich experience of 39 years during which he commanded the Leander-class Frigate INS Udaigiri, Guided Missile Destroyer INS Ranvir and the flagship aircraft carrier.

Before taking over the eastern Naval Command at Visakhapatnam, Verma was the Navy vice chief and has been decorated with Param Vishist Seva Medal, Ati Vishist Seva Medal and honorary Aide de Camp of the President.

Born on November 14, 1950, he was an alumnus of Royal Naval Staff College in UK and the US Naval War College. He also has instructional experience at National Defence College as Senior Directing Staff and at Defence Services Staff College at Wellington. Verma has also commanded the Naval Academy at Goa. He was commissioned into Navy on July 1, 1970.

Vice Admiral Verma, who is at present the Eastern Naval Commander at Visakhapatnam, will take over from incumbent Admiral Sureesh Mehta on August 31 when the latter retires from service, the government announced here.
