In some point in the past he battled with Ao who remembers His chakra and find out that Danzou transplated Shinshui's sharingan, chakra and right arm into his own body. Also Shinshui waas ordered by the Uchiha's to keep a close eye on Itachi because Itachi was acting strangely. After a while the found Shinshui drowned with a suicide note saying that he was tired of carrying out his clans duties. Everyone knew that the Shinshui never killed himself because he was loyal to the clan. People suspected it was Itachi. Later on when Sasuke fighted Itachi in Naruto Shippuden, Itachi confesses that he killled Shinshui.
