Technically, The Lion King first originated from a treatment titled "King of the Kalahari" written by Thomas Dirsch in 1988 who submitted to the Disney studios. The treatment started production of King of the Jungle in 1989 which was later retitled as The Lion King.
Thomas S. Disch, author of The Brave Little Toaster, wrote a treatment titled "King of the Kalahari" and submitted to the Disney studios, but he received no credit as Disney considered his treatment work-for-hire in 1988. Roger Allers, after serving as story supervisor for Beauty and the Beast, joined the project when it was called King of the Jungle in 1991. Allers along with Don Hahn, Rob Minkoff, Gary Trousdale, and Kirk Wise worked for six weeks to try to develop the story. The next year, screenwriters Irene Mecchi and Jonathan Roberts worked together to lighten the overall dark mood of the story. Also, the filmmakers went to Africa to take photographs of African animals and the landscapes to use for the film's scenery.
Aladdin co-lyricist Tim Rice also signed on to compose new songs, and requested Elton John's involvement. Wanting African culture to be included in the film, the filmmakers requested Power of One composer Hans Zimmer to score the film; Zimmer also brought South African composer Lebo M onto the project.
The animation for the film was done at the Feature Animation studio facility in Glendale, California and at the Disney-MGM studios in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. Through the entire production of the film, The Lion King was considered a "B-movie" compared to Pocahontas, which was in production at this time, as Disney Feature Animation chief Jeffrey Katzenberg considered the latter more prestigious and Oscar-worthy.
