You are probably thinking of Lloyd Nolan, who played the role of Dr. Morton Chegley. "Julia" ran from 1968-1971. It starred Diahann Carroll as a nurse and was one of the first TV series to star an African-American woman.

I believe it was "I Love Lucy"
Everwood
Julia starting Diana Carroll.
Julia was a sort of situation comedy about a Black Nurse, who worked essentially for a White Doctor, played by Lloyd Nolan. She had a child- on the show, played by a juvenile Black actor. It was understood she was a war widow. Still, the idea of a single-parent family in a realistic setting was a pace-setter for the times. Diahann Carroll I believe played the title character. An interesting fact was the Doctor character, Mr. Nolan, was plagued by fan letters asking for all sorts of medical advice! He went to the sponsor- General Foods and they thought the situation was funny enough to work it into their Employee magazine distributed at Maxwell House, then in Hoboken and other GF installations.
