he and ponyboy rescued some kids who were in the abandoned church when it was on fire. on his way out, a piece of burning wood broke his back and he got other injuries too. as a result of all this he died.
How was Johnny good-hearted?
When him and Ponyboy got back and went back up to the church. Johnny got out the of the car to rescue the little kids that were trapped in the burning church. He didn't have to, and he knew it was possible for him to get hurt or found by the cops, but he did it anyway. He knew it was his responsibility because either he or Ponyboy didn't put out their cigarette all the way, and he knew he was going to have to take responsibility for those actions. That shows that he is good hearted. And doing that good deed is precisely what makes the newspapers think that Johnny is a hero.

Based on the outsiders by SE Hinton I think Ponyboy and Johnny alike in many ways like they are both tuff and they both decided to run away because ponyboy got slapped by dary because ponyboy was out late also they are both in the same gang and are very caring like when Johnny went to get supplies because they were staying in an abandoned church, he saw gone with the wind he remembered pony wanted to read from he was a kid and he bought it to pass time. Also they both dislike dally and they are also similar in age only two years apart. they both also have a sensitive side both and like watching the sunset like when they were at the sunset after they went to the movies with socs girls, they were watching the sun set.
