It is attributed to Pratap Narayan Mishra (1856-1894), an eminent essayist and journalist and an associate of Bharatendu Harishchandra. The slogan was originally inspired by the divide between Hindi and Urdu (equated with the Hindu-Muslim divide). However, over the last several decades it has been appropriated by Hindi imperialists, cutting across politcal ideological positions, to further the cause of thrusting Hindi as "the" national language down the throats of all Indians.
