The earliest known person to suggest that the Earth revolved around a "central fire" was the Greek astronomer and mathematician Aristarchus of Samos, in about 260BCE. But that notion was overtaken by the "more obviously correct" philosophy of Aristotle, who may have been the wrong-est man to ever live.

The concept and name of the "heliocentric" theory was re-invented by Nicholas Copernicus, sometime around 1525.
