They were Jack Nicholson, Al Pacino, Christopher Walken, Chevy Chase, Nick Nolte, Steve Martin, Kurt Russell, Perry King and Bill Murray. George Lucas didn't want to use an actor he had worked with before (Harrison Ford was in American Graffiti (1973)) but he knew he was the one for the role after he read for the part.

∙ 14y agoAccording to the imdb (internet Movie DataBase) page about the movie, "Michael J. Fox had always been the first choice for Marty," but because he was on the show Family Ties at the time, at first he turned it down. Eric Stoltz was then cast as Marty, but he and the rest of the cast/crew didn't see eye-to-eye about the direction the film was going. So Stoltz was replaced by Fox, who filmed Family Ties during the day and Back to the Future at night (and got virtually no sleep at all for the whole shoot).
