He was the only person from Japan on the Titanic, and one of the few non-white survivors. Of course, being the lovely people they were at the time, the Japanese government and media made him out to be a coward and embarrassment to the country. Being alive was apparently a pretty shameful thing in Japan during the early and mid 20th century. He also documented some of the racism that occurred during the sinking.
