Gary Cooper was voted an honorary 1960 Academy Award "for his many memorable screen performances and the international recognition he, as an individual, has gained for the motion picture industry." James Stewart accepted the special award on April 17, 1961, because Cooper was too ill with cancer to attend. He died a month later.

During his illustrious film career, Cooper won two Best Actor Oscars, for "Sergeant York" (1941) and "High Noon" (1952).
