The Oceanic Steam Navigation Company or White Star Lineof Boston Packets, more commonly known as the White Star Line, was a prominent British shipping company, most famous for its ill-fated luxury flagship, the RMS Titanic, and the World War I loss of her sister ship, Britannic. In 1933, the line merged with its chief rival, Cunard Line, which operated as a separate entity until 2005 and is now part of Carnival Corporation & PLC.

The White Star Line had several Managing Directors during it's history, but I guess that you are interested in who was in charge of it at the time of the Titanic disaster. This was J. Bruce Ismay, a Scotsman who was both owner and M.D. of the line. He was actually travelling on the Titanic when disaster struck, and was in part responsible for the disaster by ordering that she proceed at full speed under dangerous conditions, and that all iceberg warnings that were radio'd in should be disregarded (in defiance of more experienced counsel, such as Capt. E. J. Smith and others). Ismay survived the disaster (which caused further controversy when so many other people perished) and was exhonerated by the Official Enquiry, but thereafter his credibility was ruined and he never recovered his reputation. He resigned his post, and retured to live as a recluse on the West coast of Ireland, where he died in 1937.

The White Star Line DID recover from the disaster however, and enjoyed many more years of successful operation before merging with Cunard in the late '30s. The White Star name finally disappered in 1952.
