Who was the first Muppet?

Jim Henson created "The Muppets" in the 1950s and began with what became his signature character, Kermit the Frog. Over time "The Muppets" became a very renowned household name. Many fans love the fact that Kermit the Frog has a love/hate relationship with a pig named Miss Piggy.

The muppets originated in the early sixties- maybe mid sixties and were a traveling act- not on their own program but a filler act on various TV programs such as Jimmy Dean ( I believe their first venue) Ed SUllivan, etc long before settling down on Sesame Street. as originally configured Kermit was not a true Frog but a ( Frog-Like creature) in ( his) own words- the character was modified to be more froggy over time.

Kermit was probably the original one, and was featured on other programs such as The Jimmy Dean ( man who recently died, not fifties actor) show. as originally conceived Kermit was not strictly speaking a Frog but as the narrator described a ( Frog-like Creature) in modern version he is Kermit the Frog and in effect the Master of Ceremonies or top- well, Amphibian, I guess by right of seniority. The Muppets were often featured on other variety shows before settling down to regular posts at the Sesame Street, among others. this might explain ( as with some Cartoons) the absence of a theme song, as they were syndicated.
