The Disney Channel aired in 1983. It launched as a premium channel (pay to view) on April 17, 1983 at 7:00 am Eastern Time. Starting September 1, 1990, some cable providers began offering Disney Channel free to customers. Over the next years Disney Channel was a hybrid channel, it could be paid for or viewed freely, depending on the provider. In 1999 all cable providers were given this option by Disney: offer Disney Channel free to customers or stop providing it.
