The year 1492 saw the first celebrations of Christmas in the Americas. The celebrations took place on Hispaniola, on what is now the Dominican Republic part of the island. Their location appropriately was called 'La Navidad', which is Spanish for 'the Nativity [of Jesus of Nazareth]'. The event was organized by New World discoverer Cristoforo Colombo [c. 1451-May 20, 1506].
