Two such individuals come to mind immediately, the Marquis de Lafayette and Count of Rochambeau. Both lead American Colonial and French troops on the side of the Colonials against the British.
As of 2021, France has around 5,100 troops deployed in Afghanistan as part of NATO's Resolute Support Mission. These troops are involved in training, advising, and assisting Afghan security forces. France has been an active participant in international efforts to stabilize Afghanistan since the early 2000s.

Cornwallis surrendered to the American Troops at Yorktown, Virginia on October 19, 1781. General Jean Rochambeau and his troops, who were French, came to Rhode Island to help the Americans. Some French also came from the West Indies. Together they trapped Cornwallis and his men, forcing him to surrender his troops of 7,000-8,000 men.
French troops first arrived in Newport, Rhode Island, in July 1780. They were sent to support the American colonies in their fight against British forces. Later, in 1781, French troops also played a critical role in the Siege of Yorktown, which ultimately led to the surrender of British General Cornwallis and a significant turning point in the American Revolution.
