The Only South African author who I am aware of is Nadine Gordimer. Her books have always been written with the subject of Apartheid at the core. My Mother informed me in her later years that Nadine was a distant cousin of mine. Nadine also won the Booker Prize.
The largest university (by terms of student enrollment) in Africa is the University of South Africa (UNISA). It is a open distance learning university with international degrees, both undergraduate and postgraduate. With 250 000 students from all over the world. Nobel Peace Prize winners, Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu is some of the former Alumni of the institution.
