The Bourgeoisie was made up primarily of educated professionals, such as bankers, lawyers, doctors, capitalists, merchants, academicians, etc. These individuals made their wealth and contributed greatly to development of France, but did not have titles of nobility (so they could not be part of the Second Estate) nor were they members of the clergy (so they could not be part of the First Estate).
