By 1891 the mission in Samoa, with headquarters near Apia, was developing steadily. Missionaries helped educate youths in small chapel schools. By June 1903, the Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ had been translated. On Oct. 15, 1977, it was announced that a temple would be built in Apia, Western Samoa.

They had no idols, however, so missionaries assumed they were a godless culture. The missionaries brought a new belief system, new rituals, new values, and new structure to the Samoan culture.
The first missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) sent to preach in the islands of the Pacific arrived in 1843. The first mission in Samoa was established in 1888, and over the next 10 years, 11 congregations formed.

Missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" church) first arrived in American Samoa in 1843. They set up a mission headquarters near Apia. The first official congregation in Samoa was set up in Pago Pago in 1893. Within the next decade, over 11 more congregations were created. As school was created in 1903 near Mapusaga. The first Relief Society was created here in 1906, and a Primary in 1908.
