Why didn't Klaus die when he used the dagger to kill his brother in vampire diaries?
He didn't die because he isn't full vampire anymore he's half werewolf so the dagger does not apply (If a vampire uses the weapon on another vampire they both die) An original can't be killed so easily, only the wood from a certain tree can kill an original. The ashes that Klaus dips the dagger in only netralize his siblings. Since Klause is a hybrid the dagger and ash do not apply to him.

What happens in The Vampire Diaries season three to Stefan and Klaus?
Well, at the start of season 3, Stefan (as normal) still wants to kill Klaus even though he is stuck under Klaus' control. At one point he even went to drive Elena off of Wickery Bridge so she would turn into a vampire! It may sound horrible, but he tells her that he would have killed her if Klaus hadn't of stoped him. This all changed on episode 13! Klaus and Elijah (he is back) invite Stefan and Damon over for an eight course meal, because he wants his coffins back from Stefan. Elijah then told Klaus that he knows better than to believe that Klaus would keep a promise, so he brings back all of his sisters and brothers (Rebecca, and Cole) most importantly his mother. Everyone expected his mother to kill him, however she just wanted her family back. Rebecca was the closest with her mother than any of them, however she didn't believe that it was her actual mother standing in front of her. It was a fake!
