Battle was avoided because the Confederate General Hardee managed to escape with his army across the river into South Carolina.

There would be no purpose in burning down Savannah. Sherman had made his point right across Georgia. Now it was time to ravage South Carolina, which had started the whole trouble - as even the humiliated Georgia folk agreed.

There wasn't one.

When Sherman reached the Savannah area, he expected a battle for the city with the small Confederate army defending it.

But that army escaped across the river into South Carolina, and Sherman occupied the city unopposed.
