Hugo, Victor Marie (1802-1885), French poet, novelist, and playwright, wrote 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame'.

His great historical novel The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1831; trans. 1833), a tale set in 15th-century Paris, made him popular and brought him, in 1841, election to the Académie Française.
