I think I know the one you are referring to, but it wasn't the kid that was a cop. He was 'adopted' by a cop. The name of the show was 'Sidekicks.' Gil Gerard played the cop and Ernie Reyes Jr. played the kid.

Criminal Minds is a good cop show to watch. Good actors and good suspensful stories. No vulgarity or sexual enuendos. Lots of action and a moral in every story.
