Why do they call a hit movie a blockbuster?

Is it because the lines are all the way around the block?

It is just a film of book that has been lavishly produced, it will have wide popular appeal and financial success, it will be overwhelmingly impressive. The word derives from the second world war, referring to an aerial bomb weighing between 4 and 8 tons which was used as a large scale demolition bomb. The word transferred to entertainment after the war
