The Navajo population have a high occurrence of albinism (1 in 1500-2000) because of a deletion in a specific gene. The individuals who are albino received the deletion from both parents, meaning they are homozygous. This particular deletion has not been found in any other Native populations in the same area. It is thought to be a "founder mutation" meaning that one of a few members of the original tribe probably carried this mutation. Murray Brilliant and his colleagues studied this deletion extensively and concluded it is probably 400-1000 years old.
