I presume you are talking about the 'world is going to end in 2012' rumor. Basically, the Mayan civilization were very much into the study of time, especially calendars. They would look at the stars and sun and calculated how long years lasted and so forth. They made many calendars, but the last one was for 2011. Because they never created a calendar for 2012, some people believe that the Mayan civilization found out that the world would end in 2012. People are spreading the 2012 rumor for several reasons:
1. They truly believe this and want to warn others.
2. They want to sell 2012 survival kits to scared people.
3. They are genuinely terrified about the end of the world.
4. They believe anything they hear.
