In 2009, the Academy decided to expand the filed of nominees for Best Picture from five to ten. The Academy has not nominated ten films in this category for many years, but it is not the first time. One of the reasons that the Academy cited for making this change is that it was that at least two Oscar-worthy films were not nominated in 2008, which many critics thought should have been. Those two films were Dark Knight and WALL-E.

Another possible reason for including ten nominees in the Best Picture category is to increase viewer ship. The Academy Awards ceremony has suffered from falling ratings the past several years. By including more films in the Best Picture category, the Academy can include more popular films, and that might encourage more people to tune in.

One of the criticism of the longer list of nominees is the new method of voting. Instead of Academy members simply voting for their favorite, they have been instructed to rank all ten in their order of worthiness. This could possibly have the effect of diluting the vote. For example, if the Academy members are divided between the first and second most-worthy film, but they all agree on which is the third most-worthy film, then the third-most worthy film will win the award.

It's not a recent trend. In the 1930s and early 1940s, between eight to 12 movies per year were nominated for Best Picture. But from 1944 to 2008, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences the number of nominations in the category was five.

In 2009, the Academy reversed its field and announced it would increase the number of Best Picture nominations to 10. The Academy later amended the total to feature as many as 10. The 84th, 85th, 86th and 89th Academy Awards fielded nine films in the Best Picture category. The 87th and 88th had eight.

The Best Picture award is considered the most important of the Academy Awards, because while there are awards for specific roles and professions, the Best Picture is usually one that has all of those qualities combined. It's looking at the whole picture, so to say, rather than just an actor or director.
