Why can't you withdraw Pokemon on Pokemon platinum when only having one Pokemon in your party?

During a battle you must have at least one Pokemon out at all times. If you only have one in your party and you were to withdraw it, there would be no one left in the fight. If that was your intention, try fleeing the battle instead.
