Why did David pick up 5 stones when confronting Goliath?

Well for one thing he was not afraid of Goliath. David had already killed a bear and a lion. He must have been a pretty good shot with that sling shot. Another thing, no one else wanted to do it.

Because nobody else had the guts to. Course it would've taken an extraordinary level of guts to do so - the guy was allegedly 9 feet tall. Trained soldiers, by no means cowards under ordinary wartime circumstances, couldn't quite get themselves to stand up to this guy. At issue was Israel's sovereignty: Goliath had challenged Israel to a one-on-one combat between him (the Philistines' champion) and a champion of Israel's choosing. The country of the loser would become subservient to that of the winner. So, it was of paramount importance that Israel put forth a champion, and one who could win. Because there were no volunteers, and because David was rather a fearless sort (he had taken on both a lion and a bear as a young teenage sheepherder), he stepped up to the plate, amid the mockery of his brothers, all of whom were in the army, and the incredulity of the commanders. How did David hear about this Goliath, when he was too young to serve in the military? He just happened to be at the front, delivering "care packages" to his brothers, the day Goliath came forward with his challenge.
