Dorothy is blown to Oz by a Tornado. She wants to find out how to get back home to Kansas, and the munchkins have told her that the Wizard would know. They tell her to follow the Yellow Brick Road.
She sets off along the Yellow Brick Road to the Emerald City, where the Wizard lives, and runs into her friends along the way.
A cyclone carried Dorothy Gale, her pet dog Toto, and the family farmhouse all the way from Kansas, to the beautiful, enchanted, magical land of Oz. Dorothy wants to go back home, because she wants to be with her Uncle Henry and Aunt Em.
That Aunt Em undoubtedly is worrying and that Dorothy isn't fond of all the problems in Oz are reasons why Dorothy Gale wants to go back home in 'The World of Oz'. The trip to the beautiful, enchanted, magic land on the other side of the rainbow is unexpected and not planned for. Dorothy walks through the door to the family farm house to escape a cyclone. She walks out of the door to find herself no longer in Kansas. But she's neither packed nor mentally ready for such a big leap.
In the subsequent books that author and Oz series originator Lyman Frank Baum [May 15, 1856-May 6, 1919] writes, Dorothy moves herself, Toto, and Uncle Henry and Aunt Em to Oz. At that point, Kansas no longer represents home. Instead, Oz ends up being where Dorothy and her family feel most at home.
Dorothy followed the yellow brick road because she was instructed to do so by Glenda the Good Witch. She was told that it would lead her to the Wizard of Oz who would help her get home.
Because it was her home.
