France had to ally with England and the United States and other nations if they were to get their country back and to defeat the German Nazis. They were soundly defeated by the Nazis because their forces were not strong enough to defend themsleves.

France and Germany were enemies. American's boat was destroyed by Germans submarines, that why American hate German and want to take revenge, so France allied with America to defeat German and France wasn't enough strong to wage war with German because German have much more troops and better weapons, they need to ally to be stronger and then defeat German-Empire. (First world war)
France and the US are allies historically and remain so because of shared interests and ideologies. Both countries have grown under Western liberalism with constitutional republican democracies.

Did France help America in war?

Only during the Revolutionary War (1776) and WW1. France was an occupied country during WW2; when TV mentions France as an ally during WW2, they HIDE the fact that France was actually occupied by the Germans since 1940, and the only "ally" in them, was a TOKEN representation of a French Government living in Great Britain.
