In 1980, Jo Ellen Misakian, a librarian at Lone Star Elementary School in Fresno, California, sent a letter to Coppola and a petition from students suggesting that he turn S.E. Hinton's book "The Outsiders" into a motion picture. Coppola investigated the idea and proceeded with production of the film, which was released in 1983. Coppola even allowed Misakian and the Lone Star students to read the first screenplay and sought their opinions on getting the story right.
The film is notable because of its cast of rising young stars, including Tom Cruise, Matt Dillon, Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, Diane Lane, C. Thomas Howell, Emilio Estevez and Ralph Macchio.
