Gary Burghoff is a dedicated conservationist. His nickname is "The Birdman of Malibu" since he kept a wildlife sanctuary. Since M*A*S*H ended, he has developed his skill for wildlife art, and has had showings and tours in Art Galleries across the United States. He has had a few smaller television and movie acting parts, by choice, because he wanted to be able to spend more time with his family, and he has also appeared in numerous stage plays. He has also become a Christian, which was how he received his inspiration to paint. See the related link.

On M*A*S*H, Radar's uncle died and his mother needed his help since she was otherwise alone tending to the family farm. He was able to leave the army on compassionate grounds. In real life, Gary Burghoff made the choice to leave because he wished to spend more time with his family.
