Why did Ponyboy get embarrassed when Cherry asked him why she didn't see his brother at school?

He was embarrassed because greasers are seen as dumb, and Ponyboy wanted to give a different viewpoint of him from Cherry. And Sodapop being a dropout was contradicting this.

He is in high school at the age of 14. Ponyboy is really close with his brother Sodapop and Johnny. He hates Steve (Sodapop's bestfriend) because of him treating Ponyboy as a kid. Ponyboy has brown, almost redish hair and has green eyes. He keeps his hair back and greased up, and he is very proud of it. But later on in the book, his hair will be bleached by Johnny Cade so that they will be disguised. Ponyboy really likes the red-head Soc cheerleader, Cherry Valance but knows they are not meant to be. Ponyboy lives in Tulsa, Oklahoma and goes to Will Rogers high school. Ponyboy has no manners but is really nice and sweet. It depends on the person. Ponyboy does not really get along with his older brother Darrel Curtis. Ponyboy Curtis (in the movie) is played by Christopher Thomas Howell.
