He was embarrassed because greasers are seen as dumb, and Ponyboy wanted to give a different viewpoint of him from Cherry. And Sodapop being a dropout was contradicting this.

How does ponyboy describes himself as being different from the rest of the greasers?

Ponyboy is well-educated. He has morals. He wants to finish school, and not be caught up with the crimes of his friends, but they all love each other. Ponyboy does not like to vandalize or anything, even though he did play the smoke game with a kid's little brother who's name leaves me at this moment. Ponyboy is also very sensitive.

Is ponyboy a nickname?

Ponyboy Michael Curtis is the youngest among the Curtis brothers and also among the gang of greasers. His parents died in a car wreck and he lives with his two older brothers, Darrel and Sodapop Patrick Curtis. Ponyboy loves reading books and watching movies and sunsets. Ponyboy is very intellegent. He is in high school at the age of 14. Ponyboy is really close with his brother Sodapop and Johnny. He hates Steve (Sodapop's bestfriend) because of him treating Ponyboy as a kid. Ponyboy has brown, almost redish hair and has green eyes. He keeps his hair back and greased up, and he is very proud of it. But later on in the book, his hair will be bleached by Johnny Cade so that they will be disguised. Ponyboy really likes the red-head Soc cheerleader, Cherry Valance but knows they are not meant to be. Ponyboy lives in Tulsa, Oklahoma and goes to Will Rogers high school. Ponyboy has no manners but is really nice and sweet. It depends on the person. Ponyboy does not really get along with his older brother Darrel Curtis. Ponyboy Curtis (in the movie) is played by Christopher Thomas Howell.
