His heart. He had numerous heart attacks. There was a history of heart illness in his family. The man smoked and drank heavily in his adult years, he drank a lot of coffee and he was an angry, stressed-out guy. People in the industry called him "TV's Angry Man" because as hard as he fought the Nazis in WWII, he had to fight TV censors and executives ten-thousand times harder to get his work and vision on the air. Programs about war, racism, paranoia and other socially relevant themes weren't allowed on TV back then.
