It goes back to a meeting that took place between series producer Irwin Allen and the executive staff of CBS. The meeting was chaired by Bill Paley, who, we are told, absolutely HATED the show and had instructed his senior staff to cancel it if the ratings ever dropped.
Unfortunately for Paley, the ratings at the end of season 3 were still viable, even though they were down, slightly. He decided to hit Allen with a one-two punch. This particular meeting was Allen's sell opportunity for season 4, where he was going to present the season 4 story arc. In it, he proposed the addition of a new character who would provide helpful information and guidance to the Robinsons, on their journey. Paley flatly denied Allen permission to introduce any new recurring characters. On top of that, he hit Allen with a demand for a 15% budget cut, per episode, for season 4.
Allen stormed out of the meeting, ending negotiations with the network for a new season. Since no contracts were signed during the previous season, the show was effectively dead, but since Allen and his production company had been planning on a new season, the end of season 3 featured no resolution to the series.
Supposedly, in the 2001, 2002 timeframe, there was a TV movie in preproduction titled, "Lost In Space, The Voyage Home" which would have resolved the series. Before production could begin, Jonathon Harris (Dr. Smith) passed away. Without his signature character, it was felt that the project would not be a success, and it was dropped. The Jupiter 2 remains forever lost.
The 12th episode of Series 4 was called 'The Stolen Earth'.
