Why did more people die in the Haiti earthquake then in christanchurch in New Zealand 2011?

People in Haiti were affected by the earthquake of 2010 because the structures could not withstand the shifting and shaking.. People did not know what to do, in an earthquake, instead of running outside, they ran inside their homes and buildings.

The buildings in Haiti were not as well built. The buildings in San Francisco must be built to codes that were written with earthquakes in mind. Such codes do no exist in Haiti. Additionally, Haiti is a very poor country, so it is not uncommon to use cheap building techniques at the cost of having unsteady buildings.

Their buildings were far more susceptible to damage (and consequently falling on people) than in Christchurch, and the post-quake relief was not as well co-ordinated
