Not really. Dally said early in the book that Johnny was one of the only things he loved, and when he died - it was Dally's "Breaking point" according to Darry. He faked out the police and wanted to die because he believed there wasn't much more to live for.

Johnny and dally both had to die because they loved each other and could not live without each other. Nobody loved Johnny but Dally. When Johnny died, Dally went and robbed a store, the fuzz was after him, and then he took his live so he could be with Johnny.

Johnny died in the hospital right after the rumble. He had three degree burns and held on as long as he could. He was burnt because he tried to save the kids from the burning church.
