Prejudice and discrimination. People did (and still do!..) think they are better than black people. They believe they did not deserve the same rights. Rosa Parks is an example of someone who stood up for black rights.

They feared that they would rebel against them, and try even harder to abolish slavery. Other reasons include them trying to come and take the rest of their family (if they still even have their family. Normally families are split up, and most slaves never actual met their parents), majority of the time, the slaves were much stronger than their owners, so in some cases the owners would fear that their former slaves would take revenge, and many other reasons that would take forever to list.
