Numerous causes existed:

  1. With the Spaniards gone the Pueblos lost their reason for unifying in the first place.
  2. They picked up their old ways and began their old rivalries.
  3. Not all of the Pueblos were happy that the Spaniards were gone.
  4. The Navajo, Apache and Comanche who for years had been kept at bay by the Spaniards increased their attacks on the Pueblos.
  5. Some had become genuine Christians under Spanish rule and had close family ties with the Spanish colonists.
