Apparently Itachi was ordered to kill his clan. The clan was plotting an attack against Konoha so they had to be eliminated. When Itachi killed them kept Sasuke alive cause he loved his brother, and even though his actions were cruel to Sasuke that night, he only wanted Sasuke to get revenge on him and kill him so he didn't have to live with killing his clan and hurting his brother anymore, and he only wanted Sasuke to kill him.
