The reason for their rapid decline in the 1920's was that their scare tactics and their violent nature. Also several KKK members who had been elected to office failed to produce any results. They simply could not stop the revolution of morals and manners that was sweeping the nation. After a series of scandals, membership began to dwindle.

The Ku Klux Klan did not cause the collapse of the Reconstruction Era in the United States. As Reconstruction came to an end, and all of the Rebel states had rejoined the Union, there had been social unrest throughout the period. In Tennessee in 1865, a group of White Southern racists formed a hate society to kill, cause fear and problems for Southern Blacks and any white supporters of Black equality. The Klan was just one of many such hate groups. As time passed in the South, the Klan came to dominate such hate groups and caused much pain and death. It was not until the middle of the 20th century that the Klan was diminished. Racism still exists in the US however, but nothing like the Klan years.
