Why did the vulteri want Bella turned into a vampire in new moon?

They were afraid because they thought she was an undead child, which was quite a problem for the Volturi in the past as they were virtually unstoppable, and totally adorable, so many vampires would lay their lives down for their "children". But because they were turned in an undeveloped state, their minds hadn't fully matured yet, which caused problems with the Volturi as it threatened exposure for them all.
Renesme, an immortal child, looked to Irina to be an undead child, so she went to the Volturi to essentially rat out the Cullens. There is another story there as to why she was so touchy about them, but I don't want to get into it here. When they learned however that she was not a full vampire child, but a half vampire, half human, they decided (unwillingly) to leave the Cullens be.
