Being an ensemble show and a co-production between Canadian television and American television, the budget was severely cut when CBS cancelled the show in the US due to low ratings. Even though ION picked the show up, they could not afford to spend as much money as CBS. After five seasons, the network saw the ratings drop, the writers wanted to move on and the actors felt the show had run it's course. They were lucky, knew they were ending and gave the show and characters a proper send-off pleasing the fans.
