Moral duty- he did not believe that as a man, he should take a place that could have been given to a woman, child or poor person.

Although he would probably have been allowed in due to his frail health (he was only 67, but had been in poor health for years), he did not consider it right that he should not set an example to the other passengers, so chose to remain aboard.

It is possible that he had been diagnosed as being terminally ill but had not told his wife that this was so, so preferred to die at sea rather than suffer what may have been a prolonged and agonising death from a disease which, in those days, may have been untreatable.
