Itachi wanted to protect Sasuke. He killed his family, his clan, his lover, but couldn't manage to kill Sasuke. When their battle was over, Itachi passed on his eye techniques to Sasuke so he could be protected against Madara Uchiha's Sharingan. Itachi thought that if he passed on the black flame technique to Sasuke then when Madara showed Sasuke his Sharingan, Madara would be wiped out and never tell Sasuke all the truth. But it failed. Itachi was ordered to kill everyone. But afterwards he threatened the Elders Of Konoha and begged the Third to protect Sasuke. He let Sasuke live on with the goal of revenge to make him appear more powerful. He freed Sasuke of the Curse Seal when he tore Orochimaru's power from him. He lied, killed. threatened, and fought to protect his brother because he loved him. He wouldn't do all of that to just kill him. He couldn't even if he wanted to. That is the true definition of their bond as brothers.

1. Sasuke didn't 'kill' him; Tobi (Madara) tells Sasuke that Itachi had a terminal illness which he succame co in the end.
2. Itachi loved his brother, he wanted Sasuke to go on with the knowledge that the Uchiha were honourable (they went as they plotting a Cu d'état), to give Sasuke the power of the Mangekyo Sharingan and to protect him from Madara.
ultimately if Itachi had have just outright killed Sasuke, when he himself had a terminal illness there would be no one left to challenge Madara.

∙ 14y agoItachi didn't kill Sasuke when he was a kid cause he actually cared for Sasuke.Is'nt that a shock!Itachi didn't want to kill his clan.It was his mission sent by Danzo and the other old geezers.Only because Danzo and the other oldies thought that the Uchiha clan was planning to destroy the village.And Itachi said he will as long as they let him not kill Sasuke cause he cared about Sasuke more than anyone.
