Why didn't the closest ship rush to the rescue of the titanic?

OK, the closest ship to the Titanic when it sent out the distress signal was the California. It did have a wireless radio because all ships did at the time. Its wireless was turned off for the night because of the rude message the Titanic sent to it so it couldn't hear the Titanic's messages. Unfortunately, the California was only 2 hours away from the Titanic and would have gotten to the doomed ship in time. The only ship within range was The Carpathia which was the one who came to the rescue.

It's true that there were other boats in the region where Titanic sank, such as the Californian, the Frankfort, the Amerika, the Birma, the Mount Temple, and maybe some others, but they were generally too far. Even the Olympic was aware by hearing chatter but she was about a thousand miles away.

The only vessel close enough that responded was Carpathia.

The nearby ship ( the S.S California) did not help because 1. The California's wireless operator was asleep (in 1912 it was not mandatory to always have somebody using the Marconi wireless) 2. The California was too far away to see the Morse lamp Titanic was trying to use (The crew on Titanic thought the unknown ship was closer) 3. The crew of the California did not understand what the flares meant.

It did came a boat to save the survivors from the RMS Titanic, the Carpathia. But this ship was four hours away from RMS Titanic. There was a ship that was closer to RMS Titanic that Carpathia, The SS Californian, but they had their wireless communication turned off, so they didn't knew that RMS Titanic was sinking.

So it did came a ship to save the survivors from RMS Titanic, but because it was so far away, it took a very long time.
