The question might be more accurate if it stated, "Why do some men have selective hearing?" Because more than likely, "not ALL men have selective hearing" which is what the question implied.

However, it might be interesting for you to know, that a woman wrote a book a few years back about her "masquerading as a man" (mustache and all) for about a year or so. Briefly: She stated that preparing for the role on a daily basis, the stress of constantly being on guard (so as not to be discovered), began to take its toll on her emotionally. She had to maintain male companionship on a "realistic schedule" and in doing so she learned something strange...she believed she discovered that "males" appeared to be more relaxed (kicked back) than females. She tried to impart to the reader that she believed "males" seemed to have some sort of "hidden or secret" sense of communication between themselves (males).

Maybe that might explain why men have traditionally built planes, ships, and tanks, then watched them crash, sink, and burn...only to get excited about it, and then commence to build even BIGGER planes, ships, and tanks! Whereas a female might have screamed "Look at all that money you wasted!" Maybe that masquerading woman discovered that there was some truth to "the only difference between men and boys was the price of their toys."
