Fact is the little man believed what he was told some times he was unlucky by belonging to the wrong side of the argument. People have always been willing to die for their beliefs, just as others have been willing to kill those who did not share their beliefs. People just believe that their religion is worth killing and dying for, and that to do so will earn them merit with the gods. Some examples are:

• The early Christians were willing to die rather than worship the Roman gods;

• The pagans of northern and eastern Europe resisted Christian invasion, because of their beliefs and national identities. Many were captured and sold as slaves, until finally Christianity triumphed.
